The Birds & The Trees

Get involved

This research collaboration is just getting started

We are interested to hear from other research groups, local decision-makers and organizations, and involved citizens about efforts and ideas on how to make our cities greener and healthier for people and nature.

A bit about us

We’re inspired to make a difference in on-the-ground conservation issues.

Our team provides a place for researchers who are collaborative, who look at questions from all angles and seek innovative solutions.

We are team-based, inclusive, and provide a supportive atmosphere for trainees from all backgrounds. We encourage our team members to practice science in a way that includes both ‘traditional’ research tools (scientific writing and data analyses) as well as less-traditional methods (storytelling, scientific communication, youth education, art, and public outreach).

We encourage creativity, joy, and collaboration as team members explore their own questions of interest.

Opportunities

Urban forest on the island of Montreal

*** We currently have a funded graduate position to work on winter bird movements and use of greenspaces at McGill University starting September 2023 ****

We generally support undergraduate students, graduate students, and postdoctoral researchers. At present we do not have any funded positions, but are happy to hear from candidates that are interested in pursuing independent research funding (e.g., through NSERC, FQRNT, Liber Ero, and Mitacs). Please note that it is challenging to support international graduate students due to limitations in the funding structures.

Past collaborations

Brainstorming between ECCC researchers and members of the Kahnawà:ke Environment Protection Office at the McGill Bird Observatory fall 2022 to co-develop conservation and management priorities

We work to make transdisciplinary, co-developed and applied research happen!

We are fortunate to work together with several different organizations . We are happy to hear from other NGOs, community groups, and various levels of governance.

Some examples of groups we are fortunate to work with:

Meet the team

We are a group of researchers across Environment and Climate Change Canada and various academic institutions. We bring together our expertise in urban ecology, forestry, wildlife, ecosystem services, and social ecological systems to co-develop transdisciplinary scientific research to apply solutions to real world problems and questions.
